Is it hard to open something like a bakery with no culinary arts degree?

by Greg
(Wisconsin)

I've always thought about opening a bakery someday, but going to culinary school is a lot of money. Could you not go to culinary school and still be successful?

Chef Todd Says:
In my opinion, no.

Baking is an art and a science. Making money on food is a very small margin. There is so much more to being successful in business than whether you can bake nice cupcakes.

However, if you have a great Marketing and Sales background, you might partner with a baker.

Breadtalk

There is an asian bakery company called Breadtalk that is offering to sell franchises. Their products are pretty unique. You'd need a spot with very high volume to make it a go and they require a 10 year commitment. Otherwise they include the training and materials.
