Help! I'm a Yankee college kid who wants to cook breakfast for a girl from Texas.

by Gordon
(Saratoga Springs)

I want to impress this girl at school by cooking her breakfast and bringing it to her dorm room this Thursday. I asked her briefly about her favorite breakfast, but if I ask again to clarify, I'll lose the element of surprise.

She said something along on the lines of grits cooked in chicken stock with cheese, pepper bacon, a fried egg and wheat toast, and here's the kicker - I think it was all served together. Have you seen something like this? Forgive my ignorance, I'm from Western Mass...

I'm a decent cook and I've got access to the dining hall kitchen, I just need your professional advice on how to make pepper bacon and whether I should put this whole thing on one plate!

Thanks mate, I love the videos, too.

Thanks Todd!

I just watched the grits and crepe videos, and I'm all set to go tomorrow morning. The tips were great! I'm excited to see what happens, it should be tasty.

The chefs in the dining hall are letting me have free reign over the range :) it pays to know people in kitchens.

Have a great one, and thanks again.

Food is Love!
by: Chef Todd Mohr

Have no fear, mate. Chef Todd to the rescue.
Some people become rock stars to get women. I think being a chef is just as good.
If you really want to do grits, refresh your memory with the grits video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W95W4ycoGBY.

Any items that will go into the grits should be cooked completely and separately. The ratio of grits to water has to stay 4:1. If you add an item that will release moisture, you're messing up the ratio. Adding raw mushrooms to simmering grits gives you an unknown amount of moisture in the dish. Cook the grits in chicken stock, and brown bacon, roast peppers, saute onions, whatever, then add these items at the end. To make it more interesting, you can get a heart shaped cookie cutter and mold the grits into a heart. However, when I think romance, I rarely think grits. Perhaps crepes would be more "oh la la". Review the crepes video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOJynWdnR70. Make the crepes, fill them with scrambled eggs with some brie or goat cheese and a little dried dill. Garnish with a small dollop of apricot or raspberry jam. Add some freshly squeezed juice (with vodka or not) and a strip or two of some thick cut, nicely cooked bacon. Now, she's yours.

Thanks for the challenge. Any guy that would go through the research to impress his girl certainly deserves her.

Chef Todd.
