A Great Tip for Quick and Easy Meal Prep

by John
(Europe)

To make cooking quick and easy, I apply a bit of pre-planning. When I buy meat I buy enough for several meals and freeze it right when I get home from the store. With ground beef, for instance, instead of freezing one big ball of meat, I portion it out (even if I don't know what I'll be using it for).

To save even more time later, I squish the meat flat before putting it into the freezer bags. This way they thaw more quickly!

Portioning
by: Chef Todd Mohr

Great contribution! Thank you.

Not only will pre-portioning save you money by buying larger quantities, it will save you time by having things pre-weighed and ready to go, it will save you effort in trying to figure out how much to make, it will save you health, as you pre-portion avoiding over-eating, and it will possibly save cutting your finger off as you try to chop 4 ounces out of a frozen pound of ground beef.

When I buy an 8-pack of chicken breasts, I break them into 4 ziplock bags for the freezer. Ground turkey is split into 4oz portions. Even cheeses can be pre-sliced and plastic wrapped.

Treat your food like the expensive and precious commody it is, and you'll save time, money, effort, your health and safety.

Chef Todd.
